HAMMERS OF MISFORTUNE have made a name for themselves in the underground metal scene with their immense talent and uncompromising approach to Metal. Some skilled musicians from San Francisco gave birth in the late 90s to this project, previously known as UNHOLY CADAVER, and later in 2001 released their first full length album “The Bastard” (an epic tale told in three acts with three distinct characters/voices) on Tumult Records.
Critically acclaimed, the album was voted among the top 40 releases of 2001 by the writers of Terrorizer magazine. Lamentations Of The Flame Princess magazine declared 2001 to be "the Year Of the Hammers" and named "The Bastard" Best Album, Best Concept Album and Best Overall Packaging.
The prolific song-writer John Cobbett (guitarist, also playing with Slough Feg, Ludicra and Amber Asylum among other projects) soon needed to bring his inspiration into the studio, and the band recorded a new album, untitled at the time, in 2002.
Early in March 2003 some line-up changes took place, when bassist Janis Tanaka (ex L7) left to join international star P!NK. Soon a replacement was found in Jamie Myers (from Like Flies on Flesh) and Sigrid Sheie (pronounced "shay", from the Menstrual Tramps).
Now that the new line-up was in place, the band was ready to hit the road again. Inexplicably, it still seemed there was no interest from labels to release the finished and untitled album, until CRUZ DEL SUR MUSIC became aware of this well-concealed secret and offered the band a two-album deal.
“The August Engine”, the title that was chosen to represent this second album, is a piece played with experience and true enthusiasm. An elegant offering that comes from the hearts of these musicians.
